But... some of those cheap Chinese paging systems are not what you might think... here's why

After buying a Retekess Chinese guest pager system comprising of 20 pagers, we decided to take a closer look, and the results are available on longrangeassured.com Ultimately, when presented to the government in the UK through trading standards local offices following our purchase from eBay it was swiftly confiscated as being illegal and unsafe. So what was wrong with it? And how safe was that system? You might be surprised!

 

Dangerous Power Supply

The power supply included with the Retekess system we bought was marked up as being 'CE approved' but in reality that was absolutely untrue. The power supply was dangerous and if there was an injury to any user (or customer) or fire in the building then the operating company would both be liable and uninsured. HSE and OFCOM and local trading standards would be very pleased to meet the operator of systems like that. And it could be you! And of course because there was no real CE testing and approval on the included power supply, if it created a fire then we would not have been insured if someone had been hurt or building fire ensued. No wonder trading standards confiscated it.

Questionable Certification

CE certification and legality and safety is most often flouted by some Chinese makers of paging systems. This means that there is no way that customers could confirm that systems are safe, that they meet the technical standards required in the UK and Europe, or frankly anything else. Some systems (not necessarily Retekess) use 'CE' as 'China Export' and use the CE mark to 'look like' a CE approval. It might be very hard to know if the stated approval is real even with what can sometimes be a bogus certificate of CE. The answer? Take your Chinese system to your local trading standards in the UK and see if they confiscate it! If they do (as they did in our case) then get your refund. Factually, we never got our money back and the seller stopped communicating.

Poor Quality

The quality of the guest systems we bought had much to be desired, and technically the system was outside the allocated range of frequency for transmission, but also had a massive 'drift' in to other frequencies that could be and often is in the UK otherwise used for legal systems. Factually it could interfere with other equipment and stop it working properly. This does not sound like a problem until it's YOU causing interference in this way and Ofcom pay you a visit. You might end up in court from breaching the Ofcom regulations. And don't even think about health and safety and affecting other equipment from transmissions that YOU will be liable for. Cheap pager systems using 433MHz under the guise of a car remote operating band is not really a professional system.

 

On the other hand, our LRS UK paging systems are rather different, the alternatives.. let's explain:

Our paging systems have been around since 1993. They are used throughout the world today and have a high power output on our systems to ensure that our customers achieve real range as they might reasonably expect from systems with up to 2 watts output that covers up to 2 miles range. Often it can be difficult to tell the difference between professional systems and cheap on again/off again systems if you're no expert, and don't believe what some might tell you on their websites! Once you use a professional paging system you would never buy those cheap part time solutions that some sell... ever.

LRS is the professional alternative compared to those very cheap Far Eastern paging systems that really fail to perform when it comes down to longevity, quality, range and support.

Don't ask about support from China on those types of system. Just a month after purchase, Amazon and eBay (where they are most often sold) won't want to know of problems so you have to return them to guess where?  Those sort of cheap solutions might be fine for some tiny venue, but a professional paging system offers so much more and is essential for commercially operated companies.

In fact, we have customers that have been using our paging systems for over 15 years in constant use and they still use them today!

Professional Quality

It might be surprising to some, but our pagers are built to the highest standards of quality and use extremely high quality components. And you can always tell when you're buying something that will last and last... LRS UK gives a full THREE YEAR WARRANTY against manufacturing defects so we have you covered. In fact that warranty is actually the longest in the business for paging systems.

Longest Range (of course!)

There is a reason why the LRS pager systems go further than cheap Chinese systems... and its by design. We operate on 459.100 MHz and have an output power of up to 2 watts. If you were standing in 'open air' with one of our LRS systems that range could be up to TWO MILES RANGE.

So why are the cheap Chinese paging systems so poor for range? That's by design. You see, typically those types of products including the Retekess system we bought operate on 433 MHz and with a surprisingly low output of just 10 Milliwatts output - that equivalent to just 1/200th of the power of our 2 Watt systems. What's more, those cheap systems work on the same frequency as a car remote! and that's so makers can 'bypass' the OFCOM legislation regarding paging systems and frequencies. The result is that those cheap Far East systems are ultra low power and don't work or are very on or off with coverage over any real range.

Headline bottom end prices are what Chinese companies relish, but understanding the actual math shows that the 'cheap' equipment in question is actually far more expensive over time. Lets do the math:

Chinese or Far East System with 10 pagers typical price £125.00 and the LRS commercial system with 10 pagers typical price £480.00 or less.

Failure rates: 

Chinese system typically fail within 3-6 months from our experience and have often very difficult support in the UK

 LRS system  0.3% failure rate = up to 1/3 of a unit failures per 100 systems per year (its basically ultra low in comparison to the Chinese systems). And over time the differences are incredible as you will see:

Over 10 years the cheap Chinese system will cost (including replacement systems because of no warranty or Chinese returns): up to £2500.00 (over those ten years)

Over 10 years (at full 0.3% for those 10 years) the LRS system might cost up to (typically and excluding non warranty breakages): a cost of £145.50 (the total for ten years!)

In fact there really is no comparative advantage whatsoever of the cheap Chinese or Far East systems. You might just throw them away when they fail - and even then that could be up to 20 systems over ten years equaling £2500.00 in any case. Assuming you could still buy them.
